The Gold Coast Desalination plant Project is part of Council’s Gold Coast Waterfuture Strategy and the State’s South East Queensland Regional Drought Strategy Contingency Supply Plan. It is the largest sea water desalination plant built on the eastern seaboard of Australia.
In July 2006, the State Government provided funding to Gold Coast City Council to support works associated with the proposed expansion of the desalination plant from an operational capacity of 55 megalitres (ML) per day to 125 megalitres (ML) per day.
The Gold Coast Desalination Alliance (GCDA) made the decision to protect any cracking that appeared in the concrete floors and walls in all storage tanks to ensure the long term durability and sustainability of the concrete structure for the asset owners for decades to come.
GCDA were seeking an innovate and superior solution and ultimately selected the Penetron repair system to undertake all the crack remediation where over 1,000 lineal metres of cracks were repaired and sealed using a combination of the following Penetron products where we were able to add some value engineering :
– Peneplug: Cementitious crystalline rapid setting anchoring plug.
– Penetron : Cementitious crystalline slurry.
– Penecrete Mortar: Cementitious crystalline mortar.
With this project being over 15 years old, it reinforces the strength, sustainability and durability of the Penetron system. Bring the power of Penetron to your next project.
Roads and Maritime Services will deliver the Burrill Lake Bridge project, which involves construction of a new bridge over salt water (Marine) to the east of the existing bridge. The project will improve overall reliability of the Princes Highway on the south coast by reducing future maintenance and providing a crossing and road approaches to withstand a one in 100 year flood event. The project will also improve road safety by providing new intersections to modern safety standards and provide improved pedestrian and cyclist access.
Burrill Lake Bridge – Princes Highway upgrade Roads and Maritime Services has completed the new Burrill Lake Bridge on the Princes Highway, just south of Ulladulla. Construction of this $58 million project was complete in March 2018.
This RMS project, the Burrill Lake Bridge, where all the Precast Prestressed Beams, were treated for durability with Penetron products to receive RMS B80 compliance (Address the high chloride content in the air).
SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium’s Penguin Expedition Exhibit is a public aquarium that features a large variety of Australian aquatic life, displaying more than 700 species comprising more than 13,000 individual fish and other sea and water creatures from most of Australia’s water habitats.
Located in Darling Harbour, the aquarium is easily accessible by public transport, including nearby train stations such as Town Hall and Wynyard.
Visitors can enjoy views of iconic landmarks like the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House during their journey to the aquarium.
SEA LIFE Sydney’s Penguin Island Expedition opened on Wednesday 9th November 2016, offering a “world-first penguin experience” to visitors. The attraction provides up-close and innovative encounters with a colony of King and Gentoo Penguins through acrylic viewing panels and from a raft that floats on a ‘river’ through the penguin’s habitat (cooled to around six degrees Celsius).
The “edutainment” style exhibit provides tourists, local residents and school children with an exciting, memorable and educational experience capable of addressing such topics as plastic pollution, climate change and declining fish stock.
With constant water and freezing temperatures, Penetron Admix was used at the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium to protect all the concrete in these extreme conditions. Penebar SW swellable waterstops were used to protect all construction joints in the build of this space.

The Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre, transformed by NBRS Architecture, and constructed by Cockram, is a new, inclusive, community minded aquatic facility in Lidcombe, Sydney. The site was comprehensively renewed to create a state-of-the-art centre that respects the historic, social and aesthetic significance of the original fabric. Integrated landscaped areas express strong geometries and provide family friendly recreation areas. The aquatic centres predecessor, the Auburn Pool, which opened in 1959 had become severely degraded and required rejuvenation to satisfy industry standards and to meet the growing needs of the community for years to come.
The centre features outdoor 50m and 25m lap pool, springboard diving, an interactive water play area and an extensive surrounding concourse with spectator grandstand. The indoor facility includes a 25m lap pool, family leisure pool and program pool.
Peneseal FH was selected to provide long term protection to the exposed concrete surrounding the pools and water play areas. Exposed to water and chemical ingress, Peneseal FH provides long term protection to the concrete without changing its appearance.
Penebar SW-55 was installed to all construction joints in and around the pool build and to any area where protection from water ingress was required.
The Shoalhaven Hospital Multideck carpark features a stunning facade inspired by the colours and landscape art of Shoalhaven luminary Arthur Boyd. The carpark provides over 300 much needed new carparking spaces whilst visually integrating into the hospitals masterplan.
The project was conceived due to an acute need of additional carparking and a requirement for improvement of hospital access.
This was the construction of Stage 2 of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital redevelopment includes new main hospital entry, a 6-storey administration space for clinical & corporate support.
Penetron Admix was used in all critical areas below grade and the exposed concrete helipad deck.
Northern Beaches Hospital cares for public and private patients from an outstanding facility with a large range of quality services provided by exceptional nurses, doctors and staff.
Penetron Admix was used to increase the durability of the concrete in the critical areas such as the below grade lift pits and the exposed Heli-pad slab.
