Health Infrastructure

Description

Naamuru Parent and Baby Unit provides holistic, multidisciplinary specialist health care that is parent and infant centred, family and carer inclusive, and culturally sensitive.

Naamuru is a purpose-built unit located at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney with eight inpatient beds opened 24 hours, 7 days per week.

Inpatient services are available for parents who are experiencing significant mental health problems in the perinatal period (before, during and after birth), and who are the primary care-giver for their baby (up to 12 months of age).

The parent and their baby are admitted together to facilitate maximum opportunity for healthy attachment and to minimise the trauma of separation. Partners or alternate support person are encouraged to stay overnight to support the care-giving and parent-baby relationship.

Penetron Admix was selected to provide maximum protection and durability to the concrete in driveway, entrance, suspended outdoor play area and external pathways.

Description

Sirius Building Redevelopment: A Brutalist Icon Reimagined with Modern Luxury and Longevity

The redevelopment of the iconic Sirius building, located in the heart of The Rocks in Sydney, involved a thoughtful reimagining and expansion of the original floor plan to create a collection of luxury apartments. This project is a prime example of adaptive reuse, maintaining the essence of the building’s brutalist architecture while infusing it with contemporary design.

Given its location by Sydney Harbour and the exposure to harsh weather and saltwater, the protection of the building’s concrete structure was paramount. Penetron Admix was selected as the superior solution for this critical aspect of the project.

The Penetron Admix waterproofing admixture was chosen for the most high-risk areas of the new concrete placement, including the podium slab, retaining walls, and pool areas. This admixture extends the service life of the concrete by up to 60 years by significantly reducing permeability, thereby offering long-term protection from water penetration and deterioration.

When added to the concrete mix, PENETRON ADMIX permanently seals micro-cracks, pores, and capillaries, protecting the concrete even under high hydrostatic pressure. Now in its third generation, PENETRON ADMIX continues to lead the industry with its unmatched performance, without affecting the concrete’s strength, slump, or setting time.

The redevelopment is a collaboration between builder Richard Crookes Construction, SCP Engineers, BVN Architecture, and Boral (Concrete Supplier), all working together to preserve and enhance this architectural landmark.

The design of the Bilgola Beach House incorporates significant use of off-form, board-finished concrete, both below ground and above ground. Melbourne, Australia – October 8, 2024 – Penetron Australia is proud to announce the successful implementation of its advanced crystalline waterproofing solutions at 431 Hampton, an exclusive coastal residential development. The three-level basement of this luxury project has been integrally waterproofed using a comprehensive suite of Penetron products, ensuring long-term durability and protection, particularly in the lower two basement levels that extend below the water table.

431 Hampton offers a grand and picturesque setting with its striking arches that frame views of the bay. This exclusive collection of twenty-six spacious homes takes full advantage of its prime coastal location, offering residents an abundance of natural light, sweeping views, and fresh sea breezes. The design thoughtfully merges indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a seamless connection between living areas and the stunning coastal surroundings. Each residence is a private, serene oasis, meticulously crafted to provide comfort and luxury.

Meeting Complex Waterproofing Challenges

Given the site’s proximity to the coast and the lower basement levels sitting below the water table, effective waterproofing was a critical requirement. Penetron Australia was selected for the project based on its proven track record in delivering reliable and innovative waterproofing solutions for challenging environments.

The waterproofing strategy for 431 Hampton included the application of Penetron Admix, a crystalline waterproofing additive, in all shotcrete and raft slab concrete to protect against groundwater ingress. Penetron Admix, when added to the concrete mix, forms insoluble crystals that seal microcracks and block pathways for water, providing integral protection and self-healing capabilities. This was essential to ensuring the long-term durability of the basement structure.

In addition to Penetron Admix, Penebar SW, a swellable waterstop, was applied to all soldier piles to prevent water ingress at construction joints. This multi-layered defense system creates a reliable waterproof barrier, even in high-hydrostatic pressure conditions.

For the lift-shaft, the Penetron Perfect Lift Pit System was installed, ensuring comprehensive waterproofing. This system provides multiple layers of defense, further securing one of the most vulnerable areas of the basement against water penetration.

Finally, all concrete finishes were cured with Supercure HR, a high-performance curing compound designed to retain moisture in concrete surfaces for optimal strength development and durability. This ensures that the concrete achieves its intended performance characteristics while maintaining long-term resistance to water intrusion.

St Kilda Rd, St Kilda, VIC

Description

Exceptionally positioned in the heart of the widely celebrated beachside suburb of St. Kilda, this a collection of timeless apartments designed by RotheLowman Architecture, with refined interiors and generous outdoor spaces including winter gardens for all St.Kilda Road Facing Apartments. Drawing inspiration from St. Kilda’s residential heritage and natural surroundings, this structure encapsulates a modern addition to this culturally rich suburb.

Penetron was chosen by builder, Balmain & Co to provide a waterproofing solution to the two-level basement. The specification provided by Penetron included all shotcrete walls, ground anchors, lift and crane base, hydrostatic slab and de-watering wells.

The thorough Penetron waterproofing specification included multiple barriers of combined waterstops to the construction joints. Penebar SW, plus Penetron slurry and an injectable hose were all detailed in to provide maximum protection and extended warranties.

All shotcrete walls and slabs had Admix-SB dosed at the pre-mix plant (Pronto – Barro Group). Supercure HR was sprayed on to walls and slab pours, and all areas had inspection reports issued.

The final product looks stunning, and a big thanks to Balmain & Co for the attention to detail and commitment to the Penetron system.

Penetron Admix Enhances Concrete Durability at Iconic Golf House Redevelopment in Sydney

Tucked away in Sydney’s vibrant Surry Hills, the transformation of Sharpie’s Golf House into a modern luxury residence marks the end of an era while embracing the future. Designed by PTI Architecture in collaboration with renowned fashion designer Collette Dinnigan, the redevelopment pays homage to the building’s industrial legacy with a blend of copper, timber, and brick finishes, while integrating contemporary open-plan living.

Originally established in 1964, Sharpie’s Golf House was recognized for its neon Golf House Sign, which depicted a golfer in mid-swing hitting a hole-in-one. While the sign has since been relocated to the Powerhouse Museum, Peter Israel, principal architect of PTI Architecture, reflects on its legacy: “The Golf House Sign is part of the history of the site, and the site itself has an affection and connection to most Sydney-siders who have lived in the city for a long time.”

The new residential development consists of 45 luxury apartments, with Dinnigan’s unique aesthetic shaping the interior spaces. Additionally, the project features a rooftop garden for relaxation and entertainment, offering sweeping views of the Sydney skyline.

To ensure the structure’s longevity, Penetron Admix was incorporated into the exposed concrete elements, with particular focus on the rooftop garden. Known for its waterproofing and durability properties, Penetron Admix enhances concrete performance, protecting against water penetration and chemical damage. This ensures an extended service life of up to 60 years, aligning with the long-term vision for sustainable urban living.

The use of Penetron products underscores the project’s commitment to both aesthetic appeal and structural resilience, ensuring the revamped Golf House will remain a hallmark of Surry Hills for generations to come

Newcastle

Description

This project at the western end of Newcastle CBD adds 160 residential units into a precinct of the city that is undergoing transition from commercial use to a mixed residential and retail area. Spire Apartments will reinforce this transition due to its placement above the existing Marketown shopping centre, providing a great amenity for the residents with the proximity to supermarket and grocery stores, gym, restaurants and support services. Richard Crookes Construction managed the construction of 153 apartments across three buildings. The Construction took place on top of an existing, operational retail precinct. Three residential towers of seven, five and four storeys on top of an existing shopping centre located in Marketown. This was the second stage of the original development; the original building was designed to accommodate the additional residential development above. The client’s goal was to minimise disruption to the retail premises below and to create a roof top garden/park that residents can enjoy. To ensure the waterproofing integrity of the open communal area, Penetron Admix was incorporated into the concrete mix design.

Penetron Admix Ensures Durability for Arena Apartments on Newcastle Beach

The Arena Apartments, an impressive coastal development on Shortland Esplanade, Newcastle Beach, exemplifies innovative urban living. Designed by DWP Suters and constructed by Richard Crookes Constructions, the project features two modern buildings with sweeping views of the ocean.

The south building, completed in March 2016, offers 55 one- and two-bedroom apartments with basement parking. The north building, finished in October 2017, includes 165 apartments ranging from one to four bedrooms. It also integrates ground-floor hospitality and commercial spaces and basement parking, making it a dynamic hub of both residential and commercial activity.

Given the project’s coastal location and exposure to saltwater and harsh environmental conditions, Penetron Admix was chosen as the superior waterproofing solution. The roof slab and podium slab of the structure was treated with Penetron Admix to extend the service life of the concrete by preventing water ingress and minimizing chemical damage from the marine environment.

Penetron Admix’s proven ability to enhance concrete durability ensures that the Arena Apartments will maintain their structural integrity for decades, offering a resilient and sustainable foundation for beachfront living.

High-End Residential, Heritage and Restoration

Description

The Clifford Apartments on the shores of Sydney Harbor. A conversion of the existing 6 x 2 bedroom apartments (with no vehicular access) on 3 levels, into 4 brand new luxury apartments. While maintaining the existing façade and its “Art Deco” style and character, a new apartment was added on level 1, plus 2 underground levels, including under-sea-water basement.

​Work included providing new road access, underground basement, new balconies and high-level but sympathetic, state of the art finishes for the new apartments.

Penetron Admix was used in all below basement to protect from not only ground water but sea water. Built right on the banks of Sydney Harbor, the concrete mix needed to be optimized to increase its durability & sustainability. Penetron Admix was chosen, as recent studies have shown Penetron Admix can increase the lifespan of the concrete by up to 60 years. Subject to wind, salts and contaminates from the ocean, Penetron Admix was also used in the concrete roof slab.
