Penetron Waterproofing at Kev Carmody House, University of Queensland – St Lucia

Kev Carmody House, a 17-storey, 610-room student residence at the University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus, is a flagship development combining resort-style living with advanced sustainability. The building features world-class amenities, including a rooftop pool, communal kitchens, and expansive indoor/outdoor spaces, designed to foster community and wellness. To ensure its durability, particularly in exposed areas like the rooftop and basement, Penetron waterproofing solutions were employed across key structural elements.

Penetron’s PENETRON ADMIX was integrated into the concrete mix for the basement and rooftop slabs, providing permanent, self-healing waterproofing. PENEBAR SW-55 Type A was used at construction joints and pipe penetrations, ensuring watertight seals throughout the structure. Additionally, Superfilm AA was applied during the pour to control rapid moisture loss on the hot and windy day, while Supercure HR helped to maintain the concrete’s hydration, enhancing its strength and resistance to cracking during the curing process.

These advanced waterproofing systems ensured long-term protection against water ingress, increased durability, and reduced maintenance for the building’s critical areas. The use of Penetron’s innovative solutions aligns with UQ’s goals of sustainability and resilience, providing a robust foundation for this iconic student accommodation..

School

Description

In close partnership with Kingdom Culture Christian School, Paynter Dixon has embraced pedagogical excellence and design innovation in delivering Australia’s first entrepreneurial school.

Kingdom Culture School at Arncliffe in Sydney’s south has grown rapidly since it opened in 2015. Collaboration is fundamental to the school’s teaching – so a well-designed open learning space was the key design feature.

As Australia’s first entrepreneur school, it mimics design principles seen at Apple and Google headquarters and provides a space to teach ‘21st century skills’ to ‘21st century learners’.

The building boasts state-of-the-art amenities, driven by the three Cs – Creativity, Collaboration and Critical thinking. The layout provides students access to multiple breakout spaces, smart classrooms, and open-plan learning spaces.

In this new exposed post tensioned slab, the concrete needed to be durable and waterproof. Penetron Admix, as supplied by Metromix, was used to extend the service life of the structure. Penebar SW55 Type B was used to treat the pipe penetrations, preventing the possibility of water ingress to the underside. The slab was then sealed, densified and cured using Penetron’s concrete floor hardener Peneseal FH-PS.
